In 2021, during a three-month residency at Kintai Art Residency in Lithuania, I discovered an observation tower in the forest and made it my studio. Built for hunting, the structure became a site of concealment and observation, where I could remain inside without revealing my presence, gazing out at the landscape for extended periods. Within it, a subtle tension lingered—between being an observer and an intruder, between seeming absent and never fully disappearing.
Time spent in the tower went beyond mere observation, prompting a reconsideration of the position of the subject in relation to nature. Even within the camouflaged cube, complete invisibility proved impossible; simply being there allowed small changes to permeate the environment. This experience led to a question: is it possible to remain without intervening, to approach a state of absence while still being present? This inquiry later extended into the work Step Back Closer.
2021년 리투아니아 Kintai Art Residency에 3개월간 체류하며 숲속에서 관측 타워를 발견했고, 이를 작업실로 삼았다. 사냥을 위해 세워진 이 구조물은 은신과 관찰의 장소가 되었고, 그 안에 머무는 동안 존재를 드러내지 않은 채 바깥의 풍경을 오래 바라볼 수 있었다. 그곳에서는 관찰자이자 침입자로서의 위치, 드러나지 않는 듯하면서도 완전히 사라질 수는 없는 상태의 미묘한 긴장이 감돌았다.
타워에서의 시간은 단순한 관찰을 넘어 자연을 바라보는 주체의 위치를 다시 묻게 했다. 카무플라주된 큐브 안에서도 완전히 보이지 않게 되는 것은 불가능하며, 그 자리에 있다는 사실만으로 이미 환경에는 작은 변화가 스며든다. 이 경험은 머무르면서도 개입하지 않고, 끝내 부재에 가까워질 수 있는지에 대한 질문으로 이어졌고, 이후 작업 Step Back Closer로 확장되었다.
